In addition to aiding the transport of abnormal fat, hCG is believed to kick start your metabolism, resulting in an increased speed at which your body burns fat. In general, to achieve long-term health and maintain weight loss, it is imperative that the weight is not lost in the form of lean mass. When the body loses lean mass, the basal metabolic rate (BMR), or ability to burn calories, is reduced as well. Many fad diets allow the body to lose lean mass, resulting in cycles of yo-yo dieting. The hCG protocol calls for a very low calorie diet (VLCD). Typically, if someone were to start a diet without hCG they would experience a loss of structural fat and muscle mass, hunger and cravings. However, if a person goes on a diet while administering the hCG hormone, a patient typically loses up to one pound of abnormal fat per day. Each pound of fat contains approximately 3500 calories, therefore making 3500 calories of energy available to them. This gives the person access to adequate amounts of energy because the rest of the calories are generated internally through the breakdown of fat deposits (lipolysis). Therefore, the patient is not hungry and loses weight.
